Global Connections Seminar XVIII

Transformations through Cooperative Learning Experiences
Gredos San Diego, Madrid | March 17-25, 2017

October 2016

Dear Global Connectors,

Good day, friends and colleagues. I hope that you are all flourishing, whether you are in school in late winter or still enjoying a summer break.

Here is the news that you have been waiting for so patiently. The dates for Global Connections XVIII are now set. We shall meet from Friday, March 17 to Saturday, March 25, 2017 in Madrid, Spain. Our hosts, as many of you already know, will be our colleagues at Gredos San Diego, led by our friend Jorge de la Calle Martin and his team. The cost of the seminar will be 2,200 US Dollars and, as usual, there will be financial aid available for those whose schools are unable to afford the full seminar fee.

Gredos San Diego has been linked to Global Connections for two years now. I visited Madrid in July and found out about many fascinating aspects of Gredos. It is a Cooperative, and this means amongst other things that every employee of the organization has a financial stake in it. The word ‘cooperative’ refers, therefore, to the structure of Gredos, but it also carries over intentionally into the ways in which the adults communicate with each other, and the ways in which the students study, cooperatively. This applies successfully on all the campuses that Gredos runs in and around Madrid.

Participants will need to arrive in Madrid on the opening Friday, in time for a welcoming dinner that night. We shall end with a farewell dinner on Friday evening, March 24, and delegates will leave during the day on Saturday, March 25. Our seminar title will be: Transformations through Cooperative Learning Experiences. We shall examine, and experience, this theme through a variety of lenses. In some sessions we shall be guided by outside speakers, and in others by our own in-house expertise.

Our principal residence will be the truly beautiful Gredos boarding school campus at Buitrago de Lozoya, a small and ancient town almost surrounded by a lovely river. Picasso used to take holidays there. Buitrago is about 45 minutes north by motorway from Madrid airport. We shall be very well looked after in spacious rooms. We shall visit some schools in Madrid, and we shall spend one night away from Buitrago, in a hotel in Toledo.

Jorge and I, with GC Board input, have put together an innovative and exciting program. This has now been posted on our GC website, along with a link to full application details. We have limited spaces, as always, so please do apply soon if you wish to attend.

Jorge and I hope very much to see you there. With warm regards, as ever.
