Global Connections Seminar XIII

Global Initiatives in Our Schools and the Connection to Leadership Development
July 12-20, 2011

Global Connections XIII will return to the location of our first seminar in 1997 – Southern Africa. We shall visit an array of extraordinary schools, in South Africa and Botswana, schools that have transformed and are transforming the educational landscape of the region. These schools are producing students with the leading skills vital for nation building and for global citizenship. See seminar details on the attached flyer.

Our focus will be on Global Initiatives in Our Schools and the Connection to Leadership Development. Each participant will be required to bring, and circulate, a short document outlining the global initiatives that her or his school is engaged upon. There will be sessions where participants will speak to this theme and share ideas through discussion. A monograph of these summary position statements, as well as more substantial papers delivered during the seminar, will be published and distributed to all participants.

Our journey will begin in Johannesburg, where we shall gather on Tuesday, July 12th. From there we will travel by coach to Botswana, Madikwe Game Reserve, and Vryburg. We will spend two days during the middle of our seminar at Madikwe Game Reserve where we will be able to relax and enjoy a bush and safari experience. Our journey will end back in Johannesburg. A detailed schedule and registration materials will be available on this website.

Principal hosts in South Africa will be Stephen Lowry, Rector of St. Stithians School, Anne van Zyl, Head of the OWLA, and Peter Habberton, Head of The Tiger Kloof Educational Institute. In Botswana, we shall be hosted by Andy Taylor, Principal of Maru a Pula School. Malcolm McKenzie, Head of School, Manjula Salomon, Assistant Head of School, Director of Global Initiatives, and Diana Jones, principal seminar organizer, will be attending from The Hotchkiss School.

The seminar fee will be $2000 USD. The fee includes all transport once participants have arrived in Johannesburg, as well as all accommodations and meals. Any small surplus generated will revert to the Global Connections Fund, administered by Hotchkiss, to be used for financial aid for needy participants in future seminars. Participation numbers are limited to 44 due to the carrying capacity of the coach. A firm expression of interest is requested by December 17, 2010. More seminar details can be found on the attached flyer.
